ARTYOU Installation – Kollektiv Hotel Regina: We accidentally made eye contact with a Mähkante in our basement

30 November 2023 - 10 February 2024
Overview

The Hotel Regina collective has found an orphaned "Mähkante" in the basement.

Exhibition duration: December 01, 2023 - February 10, 2024

Steinentorberg 28, Basel

The “Mähkante” is a concrete paving stone and is used to border lawns. It is elongated in shape, flat and weighs around six kilograms. The nose of the stone describes a semicircle, while the other end - the tail - is the exact counterpart towards the inside. It brings structure to the vegetation and makes it easier to work precisely with the lawnmower on Saturday mornings.

The turned leg is another pillar of the local culture. It supports the milking stool, the table, kitchen table, wardrobe, cowbell collection, wing chair, couch, spinning wheel. Hotel Regina places loudspeakers on it, that works too.

The interactive installation “We accidentally made eye contact with a Mähkante in our basement” combines instruments, loudspeaker systems and recycled objects as a landscape that can be can be wandered through like Ikea. Inspired by basement finds, the Hotel Regina collective creates a speculative version of its own identity.

The Hotel Regina collective formed in 2016 while studying together at HyperWerk in Basel. The members Balz Scheidegger, Christian Holliger, Dominik Dober, Moritz Praxmarer and Quirin Streuli come from different craft and creative professions, which define their joint work. Their work is located in the fields of art, design and performance and is characterized by a wide variety of media. They work with photography, film, text and music; performative and installative, whereby they repeatedly break the rules of these media and methods and make them the content of their work. The projects are created in thematic and local contexts whose structures, processes and narratives they (self-)critically examine. They react to what they find with playful interventions that present themselves as proposals for negotiation. Hotel Regina has thus developed a way of working that is open to process and makes the environment in which a project takes place the most important actor. Newspaper article
